Phase 2

In Phase 2 children are taught 19 letters (graphemes) and their corresponding sounds (phonemes).  It moves children on from oral blending and segmentation to blending and segmenting by reading letters (graphemes). Children are encouraged to start blending sounds into words straight away. As the children move through this phase they will be able to read an increasing number of words.

By the end of the phase many children should:

  - be able to read some VC (eg. in) and CVC (eg. dog).

  - be introduced to two syllable words and simple captions.

  - be exposed to double consonants (ss, ll or ff).  This helps the children understand that 2 letters (graphemes) can represent one sounds (phoneme) before they enter Phase 3.

  - be able to read some high-frequency ‘tricky’ words: the, to, go, no.
