Phase 5
Phase 5 phonics
During Phase 5 children will learn more graphemes and phonemes.
Alternative spellings for graphemes will also be introduced. For example: the children will already know ‘ai’ as in rain from Phase 3 but will now also be introduced to ‘ay’ as in play and ‘a-e’ as in make.
With practise the children’s speed at recognising and blending graphemes improves.
Reading and spelling knowledge ans skills will be worked on extensively through a variety of games and activities which promote and encourage the application of knowledge gained.
Tricky words (words which cannot yet be decoded) are also taught: oh, their, people, Mr, Mrs, looked, called, asked, could
