Our school’s philosophy of language and literacy is that the teaching of English has a crucial role to play in equipping learners with the language skills they need to become effective members of their own communities, the world of work and of society in general. English underpins the school curriculum by developing a child’s ability to speak, listen, read and write for a wide range of purposes. Helping children to express themselves clearly orally and in writing enhances and enriches teaching and learning in all subjects. In Early Years and throughout Key Stage 1 we use the Letters and Sounds phonics programme.

All our pupils, irrespective of age, ability, gender and ethnic origin are entitled to participate fully in, and benefit from a broad range of appropriate English teaching and learning activities at every stage of their education. They are entitled to experience success and enjoyment from their English learning activities.
