Statutory Assessment (SATs, MTC, Phonics Screening)

Phonics Screening Check for Year 1 children in 2024
The phonics screening check for Year 1 children will take place week commencing Monday 10th June 2024.
KS2 SATs 2024
SATs Tests for Year 6 pupils will take place between Monday 13th May and Thursday 16th May .
At the end of Year 6, children will sit tests in:
- English Reading
- English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
- Mathematics
These tests will marked externally, and the results will be used to measure your child’s progress and the school’s performance. Your child’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessment to give a broader picture of their attainment.
Here is the timetable for KS2 SAT week 2024.

Key Stage 2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Tests
Pupils will sit one grammar and punctuation paper, and one spelling paper.
The grammar and punctuation paper is a mixture of multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
The spelling paper requires the pupil to listen to their teacher as a transcript is read and spell out the missing words in their answer booklet.
Key Stage 2 Reading Test
The reading paper requires pupils to read a booklet that contains three extracts. They must then answer questions that test them on their comprehension.
Key Stage 2 Mathematics Tests
Children will sit three papers in maths:
- Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes (written)
- Papers 2 and 3: mathematical fluency, solving problems and reasoning, 40 minutes per paper. (written)
Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:
- Multiple choice
- True or false
- Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart
- Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem.
Maths MTC (Multiplication, tables, check) Year 4
This test is not part of the KS2 SATs, and is for children in Year 4. The check is made up of 25 questions. Children will have a maximum of six seconds to answer each question. There will be a three-second pause before the next question is displayed.
